a) What is charity?
Charity is the virtue by which we love God above all things for his own sake, and by which we love our neighbor as we love ourselves because we love God. Charity is also commonly called “love.”
Charity is the queen of virtues. Other virtues carry us towards God, but it is charity that fastens us to God. If we truly love God, it will please us only to do what will please him. We become less selfish and more pleasant to others.
b) Why should Altar Servers live the virtue of charity?
Our spiritual life depends on how much we love God. When we commit a single mortal sin, we tell God that we hate him, that we reject him, and hence we die spiritually. In spite of this, God waits for us to return to him, like the prodigal son—this we can do through the sacrament of Confession.
If we truly love God, we will also love others, starting with those near us, especially our family, friends, classmates, fellow Altar Servers, teachers, priests and others who guide us. We should strive to serve them everyday, especially in little things, and make life happier and easier for them.
