19. Industriousness

a) What is industriousness?

Industriousness is the virtue that makes us eager to work to the best of our abilities and with joy, in spite of the difficulties.

God wants us to take care of the world through our work. By doing our daily chores well and joyfully, we help others and ourselves. Learning new skills will allow us to do different kinds of work. To rest does not mean not to do anything, but rather to do less demanding work, such as sports, mingling with friends, watching a wholesome film, reading a good book and so on.

b) Why should Altar Servers live the virtue of industriousness?

Following God’s will by doing our ordinary duties well is our means to holiness. We can offer these efforts up to God for our intentions and for the intention of others, just like when we pray or offer sacrifices.

An Altar Server should be a good example to others. They should always see him carry out his tasks seriously, or relax when it is time to do so, and never waste time, disturb others or aimlessly loiter around.
