a) Who is the Blessed Virgin Mary?
The Blessed Virgin Mary is the Mother of Jesus Christ. He who was born of Mary in Bethlehem, as we remember especially during Christmas, was Jesus Christ himself. This Jesus Christ is God the Son, who is true God. Therefore, we also say that Mary is truly the Mother of God.
By becoming man, Jesus became our brother. Hence, Mary his Mother is also our Mother. Because God chose Mary to be his mother, he preserved her from original sin, and Mary remained sinless during her life. Mary is the most beautiful and perfect creature God has ever made.
b) Why should an Altar Server be devoted to Mary?
An Altar Server should be devoted to Mary because she is our model in obeying God’s will. Mary is not God, but because of her special role in bringing Jesus into the world, she also has a special role in bringing us closer to God and to heaven, by guiding and protecting us here on earth.
We can increase our devotion to Mary by praying the Holy Rosary, wearing the Scapular, having her image in our room and in our wallet, praying three Hail Marys before sleeping, remembering her in special ways on Saturdays and in the month of May, and through the different Marian prayers, such as the Hail Mary, the Hail, Holy Queen, the Memorare (Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary…), etc.
