51. The Fifth Commandment: Human Life is Sacred.

a) What is the Fifth Commandment of God?

The Fifth Commandment of God is: You shall not kill.

We should take care of our own spiritual and bodily well-being, and to the extent possible, that of our neighbors. We sin against the Fifth Commandment by killing, committing suicide, hating others, wishing ill of others, quarreling or getting angry frequently, revenge, drunkenness, drug addiction, scandal (causing others to sin), and bad example.

b) Why should an Altar Server know and live the Fifth Commandment?

All human life is sacred, since we have been made in the image and likeness of God. We should refrain not only from killing, but from anything that could physically or spiritually harm others.

Jesus’ commandment of love goes way beyond not hurting others. An Altar Server should strive to make others feel God’s love by serving them as much as he could.
