47. The First Commandment: The Worship of God.

a) What is the First Commandment of God?

The First Commandment of God is: I am the Lord your God; you shall not have strange gods before me.

To worship only God also means to find out what he wants of us, firmly believe and follow what he teaches, and carry out the promises we make to him. We should not worship false gods, or believe in superstition, or that there are other gods more powerful than God himself. We should also not commit sacrilege, which is to mistreat sacred persons, places or things.

b) Why should an Altar Server know and live the First Commandment?

An Altar Server is very much involved in God’s worship, especially in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. His piety and attention in serving, his silence when inside the Church, and his care for the vestments, vessels, linens, and other objects used in the Liturgy will create an atmosphere of prayer that will benefit the whole Church.

We do not worship the Blessed Virgin and the saints (nor their images), but rather show them our respect and veneration since they are our models in following God’s will.
