29. The Dignity of the Human Person.

a) What is the dignity of the human person?

God, who created man and woman in his image and likeness, has called us to be with him and to be happy forever in heaven in soul and body. God has given us our intelligence and our will, to help us search for truth and goodness, become better persons, and become more like Christ, our model. Human dignity is the person’s intrinsic worth, brought about by these factors. As such, persons have to be respected and valued.

While each one of us has such a great value, original sin has injured our nature and made us subject to error and tend towards evil in the exercise of our freedom.

b) Why should an Altar Server understand the dignity of the human person?

Our weaknesses and failures should remind us to ask God’s grace and exert more effort to respond to the greatness of our vocation, follow his will, grow in our spiritual life, increase in virtues and avoid sin.

The Altar Server’s courteous words, good manners, respect for others, thoughtfulness, and sacrificing service, done in a natural manner and without calling other people’s attention, will help others appreciate the dignity of the human person.
