26. Holy Orders.

a) What is Holy Orders?

Holy Orders is the sacrament through which men are constituted sacred ministers—bishops, priests, and deacons—to teach, sanctify, and govern the faithful. The chief powers of the priests are: to change bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, and to forgive sins in the sacrament of Confession.

Through Baptism, all the faithful share in the priesthood of Christ (this is called the “common priesthood”), making us members of the Church, which is the Body of Christ, with the right and duty to know the doctrine and do apostolate. Through Holy Orders, priests receive a sacred power from God, by which they serve the faithful, acting in the name of Christ the Head of the Church (this is called the “ministerial priesthood”).

b) Should an Altar Server be ready to answer the vocation of becoming a priest if God calls him?

All Altar Servers are called by God to live their Christian life well, to become saints, to go to heaven, whether they become priests or not. Each one should follow the vocation to which the Lord leads him. Meanwhile, since he is still in the earlier stages of life, an Altar Server should ask God to enlighten him in his prayers, and if it is his will, to give him the gift of vocation to the priesthood.

The Altar Server should be very generous if he feels that God is calling him to become a priest. The life of a priest is a life of service, of forgetting oneself, of facing many trials and challenges. But it is also a life full of joy and happiness, of fulfillment, and of love for God and neighbor.
