15. The Sacraments in General: Notion of Sacrament.

a) What is a sacrament?

A sacrament is a sensible and effective sign of grace, instituted by Jesus Christ and entrusted to the Church, through which divine life is given to us. They are means to make us holy, build up the Church, and give worship to God.

There are seven sacraments instituted by Christ: Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Eucharist, Confession (or Penance and Reconciliation), Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Matrimony.

b) Why should an Altar Server know and receive the sacraments?

Each time we receive the sacraments worthily, God gives and increases “sanctifying grace” in us, which is our sharing in God’s life. Each sacrament also gives a special grace, called “sacramental grace,” which helps one attain the purpose for which the sacrament was instituted. For example, the sacrament of Confession forgives us our sins, and strengthens us in our struggle against temptation and sin.

The sacraments strengthen the Altar Server’s personal prayer, spirit of sacrifice, and concern for others. An Altar Server should be able to explain the need for the sacraments to his friends.
