a) What is Liturgy?
Liturgy is an exercise of the priestly office of Jesus Christ, that is, of the work of our redemption. In the Liturgy, God makes man holy through signs perceptible to the senses.
Through the Liturgy, God is publicly given worship by the whole Church, that is, by Jesus Christ the Head and his members. Hence, every liturgical celebration is a sacred action surpassing all non-liturgical celebrations.
b) Why should an Altar Server devoutly participate in liturgical celebrations?
All other Church activities, including catechesis, preaching, Bible study sessions, missions, evangelization, education, philosophical and theological studies, social action, and other apostolates, aim to bring all persons to participate in the Liturgy, especially in the Eucharist: that is, to praise God in the midst of his Church, to take part in her sacrifice, and to eat at the Lord’s supper.
Such an attitude towards God deep within one’s heart will surely overflow into a loving service towards one’s neighbors, seeing in them Jesus himself. The Liturgy is the fountain from which all the Church’s power flows. For it to produce its full effect, we need preparation and the right attitude, to make our thoughts and actions match our words.
