a) What is the Church?
The Church is the people of God, composed of those who have been baptized and who share the same true faith and the same sacraments. The Pope, who is the successor of St. Peter, and the bishops in union with him lead the Church. The Church is the Body of Christ, with Jesus as the head and we as members. The Church is also the Temple of the Holy Spirit, who resides in this body which is the Church.
The Church has four chief marks. She is one, because she has one faith, one sacramental life, and one visible head who is the Pope. She is holy, because Jesus founded her, she offers the means to salvation, holiness is the vocation of her members and the purpose of her activities, and the Blessed Virgin Mary and the saints are her members. She is Catholic (that is, universal), because Christ has sent her to teach the faith and offer the means of salvation to the whole world. She is Apostolic, because our faith comes to us from the Apostles, whose successors are the bishops, who guide us.
b) Why should an Altar Server pray for the Church every day?
We should pray much for the Church so that she may carry out her divine mission as effectively as possible, reaching out to all peoples and teaching them God’s will.
Jesus founded the Church to unite us in love and to offer us eternal salvation. Hence, each one of us, in our own little way, should learn God’s teachings through the Church and make them known to our relatives and friends.
