a) What is piety?
Piety is honor and respect given to someone who is in any way responsible for our existence or well-being: God, our parents, persons older than us, priests, superiors, etc.
God not only created us from nothing, but also continues to care for us. Through piety we thank, honor and serve him, both directly and through his representatives in caring for us. We also admit that without them we cannot do much.
b) Why should Altar Servers live the virtue of piety?
Piety arises as our response to God’s infinite love, as we acknowledge his gifts, and as we praise and honor him for his greatness and goodness, through our daily prayers and sacrifices.
Piety has to be translated into actions. When we see how much God cares for us, we also realize that he wants us to cooperate in caring for others. Through our prayers, God enlightens us so that we could know how to serve others more. He also gives us graces so that we could be capable of doing his will.
